Game console repair is a tricky thing. There are a lot of people out their claiming to have the best repair guide or the best quick fix, but the truth is that there is a easy answer for why most consoles break. The solution however not quite so simple.
The Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 game consoles and most electronics manufactured since 2005 are built using lead free solder. This was done as a precaution to keep the lead from electronics out of landfills. The unforeseen consequence is weaker solder that after time and use will become brittle and break.
Solder breakage can cause many different symptoms with these consoles such as overheats, graphical artifacts, glitches, and even the dreaded flashing red ring of death or yellow light of death! (rrod ylod)
The oven trick and towel trick are a few of the ways that companies will try to fix their consoles, right idea, very wrong approach. It is true that this problem is remedied with heat, but the process is a very delicate one.
It was once that all the components would sit on one side of a circuit board and their wires would extend through to the opposite side of the board where it is soldered into the circuit. No longer, these consoles use double sided circuit boards with surface mounted chips. The circuit and the component now live on the same side of the board. Each side of the board can have a different layout and there are circuits embedded in the board. Instead of having wires extending through the board and soldered securely on the other side, microchips are now attached to the board simply using tiny balls of solder over each contact point.
The point is these things aren't built like a rock. They are constructed cheaply, and the process to repair them correctly is very precise and requires special tools and knowledge. The deteriorated solder joints must be heated until the solder becomes liquid and reforms the deteriorated bonds. This process, known as a "reflow" is very delicate and requires special tools and skills. The solder must be heated to a very high temperature and held there for a specific period of time without damaging the rest of the board. Typically a reflow station is required. A lasting repair can only be performed with the right tools and right knowledge.
It is recommended that if your Xbox 360, Playstation (PS) 3 game or other console fails you should contact a reputable repair company.
